Lesson on drawing a clown by cells
This lesson presented in this article is the simplest. Therefore, we recommend starting with it if your drawing skills are not yet great.
What you will need:
- checkered paper (you can take regular notebook sheets);
- pencil or pen;
- colour pencils;
- eraser.
Drawing steps:
- We pick up an ordinary pen or pencil and start creating.
- To draw, you need to take a sheet of paper in a box, it can be an ordinary notebook sheet. We find the middle on it, it’s worth starting a little above it. There we draw a small circle, and on the sides - two arches
- After this stage, you should draw two oval shapes above the arms. These will be the eyes. We place the pupils in them. We complement the eyes with eyelashes.
- A little lower we begin to draw the mouth. It resembles the shape of a triangle and consists of two arcs.
- Draw out the shape of the face. This is how we get the head. We draw the hair with wavy lines. Remember that they have a voluminous hairstyle. We depict a hat on top.
- We depict a clown collar. We draw 7-8 straight lines from his chin. Then we connect them with semi-ovals from below.
- Let's get to the hands. First we outline the voluminous sleeves. We do this as follows: draw a line down from the second line on the left, outline the arm and arcs that represent the sleeve. We do the same on the right.
- Let's start drawing the pants. We draw lines from the edge of the sleeves and draw out the legs. In the middle of the body we depict several buttons.
- Let's finish drawing the second hand. At the bottom of the pants we add silhouettes of boots. We depict several balls around the clown, which he supposedly juggles. We figured out how to draw a clown, all that remains is to color the image.
- At the bottom of the legs we add boots. Around the clone, starting from the hands, draw balls. Our character will be juggling.
- All that remains is to color our drawing. For the face we use flesh-colored pencils.
- For hair, you can use an orange pencil. And for clothes - absolutely any colors. You can give free rein to your imagination.

Clown with bow tie
What you will need:
- drawing paper;
- multi-colored pencils or markers.
Drawing steps:
- Now that you know how to draw a clown, we'll move on to variations of the drawing. For example, a clown with a butterfly. We take drawing paper and multi-colored pencils or markers.
- Draw a circle on a piece of paper. This will be the head.
- Along the edges we depict two small ovals - ears.
- Don't forget about the artist's hat.
- On the right side of the hat we place a flower. Under the hat are clown curls. Remember that he must have full hair.
- We learned how to draw eyes and a mouth in the previous master class. You can repeat it if necessary.
- We draw a large and voluminous bow under the head. It is he who is now the highlight of our drawing.
- Let's start coloring the clown. His hair can be made orange. The preferred color for the bow is red.
- For the face we choose flesh colors. We highlight the cheeks with red. This will give the artist a blush.
- Absolutely any colors can be suitable for the hat and flower. You will have a chance to show all your imagination.
Wonderful artist
Portrait of a clown, draw with a pencil:
- Draw a circle or oval - this is the head. On both sides of the head we outline the ears, on top there is a cap like a chef’s, only flattened and rectangular in shape. There is a semicircle on top of the cap - it turns out to be a cap.
- Now we draw the hair: from the cap on the head there is an outline of wavy hair on one side and the other.
- Let's draw a small circle under the chin, draw ovals on both sides of the circle - a butterfly.
- On the face there are two small ovals next to each other - eyes.
- Below them is a larger horizontal oval—the nose.
- Now we draw two arcs from the nose on one side and the other, connecting these arcs into an oval - this is the makeup area around the mouth.
- Let's draw a mouth in this oval with an arc with the ends up - a cheerful clown, or with an arc with the ends down - a sad clown.
- We draw the pupils of the funny circus performer’s eyes and highlight the cheeks with small circles. Draw in black eyebrows.
For coloring, you can use pencils, felt-tip pens, and ballpoint pens.
Let's paint the hat green, blue, or yellow. Paint the hair orange, then the face and ears with a matte color, leaving white makeup. We draw the nose, cheeks, mouth in red; bow.

How to draw a sad clown in 5 steps
What you will need:
- drawing paper;
- a simple pencil or marker;
- eraser.
Drawing steps:
- We start drawing the clown from the head and body. First we make a large horizontal oval, and then on top of it - a small elongated one.
- We draw the face and suit. A circus performer's costume usually has a puffy collar. Add ears, eyes, nose. And the most important thing is the mouth. It is he who will express sadness in our clown. Don't forget about arms and sleeves.
- We place an elegant hat on our clown’s head. We draw the pupils in the eyes, draw the mouth and fingers more carefully.
- An addition to the face will be a tear running down the artist’s cheek. In his hands we draw a flower pot, and in it there is a flower. A sadly bent flower will add some atmosphere to our picture. We decorate the hat with a ribbon. We add patches to his robe.
- We go through shading along our drawing. And so! The masterpiece is ready!
And so, you and I learned how to draw a clown. Both funny and sad. By the way, a wonderful film was released that year - “It 2”. Perhaps after watching this masterpiece you will want to draw a clown, perhaps you will want to fully feel the atmosphere of the film.
Both children and adults can use these master classes. They are accessible to absolutely everyone and are great for beginning artists who don’t know where to start their creative journey in this industry.
If you want to develop artistic abilities in your child, then these lessons are perfect for you. He can even get an A in fine art!
Draw, create and do not deny yourself anything. After all, creativity is so beautiful
First stage
The most important step is to draw a sketch step by step with a pencil. Clowns can be completely different; there are no strict rules when drawing a colorful actor.
Everything is done at the discretion and desire of the child. Now comes the step-by-step instructions for children.
Coloring pages for sketching
The clown (a drawing of this character for children can be repeated without using step-by-step tips, but by copying ready-made sketches for coloring books) can be drawn by the child independently and then painted in any colors.
Depending on your drawing skills, you can offer your child a more complex or simple sketch to draw:
- A simple coloring book suitable for preschool children. All the figures are similar to familiar squares and circles, so it will not be difficult for a child to copy the silhouette of a clown.
- The coloring option is suitable for preschool age. More difficult than the first option due to uneven and curved lines.
- A simple example of drawing a clown's head. The sketch does not take much time - you only need to draw one part of the body. The face and elements of the clown's makeup are drawn in more detail, but all the figures are large and light.
- A detailed version of the full-length coloring of a clown is suitable for children of primary school age. To maintain proportions, first draw the silhouette of a clown, outline the head, arms and legs.
Afterwards, all the figures are outlined in volumetric form. They pay more attention to the details of the costume - buttons, polka dots, pompoms, frills. The eyes are depicted as small dots, and the mouth as a wide arc.
- You can invite children to draw a character from the children's cartoon "Funtik", who was dressed in a clown costume. This option is more difficult due to uneven lines, so it is recommended for children aged 7-9 years.
If it is not possible to redraw a detail, the child can replace it: make the hat square or triangular, buttons in the form of buttons or stars, a sharp or wavy frill, etc.
- An image of a cheerful clown with many balls, flowers or other objects in his hands. The drawing is complex due to uneven details, a large number of strokes, and small fragments. Recommended for sketching by children of primary or secondary school age. Pay attention to the lines of the costume, which is deliberately made streamlined or voluminous for comical effect.
- A difficult drawing option due to the large number of details. The clown figures themselves look simple, but there are a lot of them, so before you start drawing, the place of each character is schematically marked on the sheet.
