Folk signs for July 1 - 10

July has always been a month of hard work in the field and in the garden, so with its arrival the cheerful festivities, round dances, and holidays, of which there were many in June, ended. This is the month of the first harvests of berries, mushrooms and other forest gifts.

July is the peak of summer. A fertile time for ripe bread, vegetables, berries and early potatoes. Haymaking, the beginning of the grain harvest.

July 2

On Zosima (July 2) the bees begin to fill the honeycombs with honey.

3 July

Methodius celebrates the feast of sparrowhawks. “If blackflies and midges are hovering over the winter crops, there will be a catch of quails.” Spider day, weather indicator. The rain is heavy - it will rain forty days.

On this day, hunters try to catch at least one quail, then, according to the sign, the whole summer will be successful. If someone is lucky enough to catch a white “prince-quail”, he will always be lucky. Previously, hunters spent weeks looking for this opportunity.

July 6

Agrafena swimsuit: start of bathing. On the eve (and night) of Ivan Kupala, medicinal roots and herbs are collected. On this day, even old people bathe in rivers, wash and steam in baths, while using various medicinal and fragrant herbs collected on the same day (or the day before) to heal from illnesses.

According to folk superstitions, it was believed that herbs and roots collected in the evening and on the night of Ivan Kupala had great healing power. There was a legend about a fern flower that supposedly opens only once a year, on the night before Ivan Kupala for just a few moments. The one who finds this flower will have many secrets revealed, he will become a seer, and will be rich.

July 7

John the Baptist, Ivan Kupala. They bathe in water and dew, dance around trees, light fires, and jump over fires. They begin haymaking before the grass is fertilized. Heavy dew on Ivan - for the cucumber harvest. According to ancient belief, Ivan Kupala personifies the flowering of the forces of nature.

This is a holiday of honoring water and sun. Since ancient times, it was customary to light ritual bonfires on the banks of rivers or lakes on the night of Ivan Kupala. They threw wreaths over the fires and jumped.

There were round dances. The fires lit on Midsummer's Eve were considered miraculous. Fire for bonfires was produced by rubbing wood against wood and was called living, forest, medicinal.

“On Midsummer’s Day the sun plays at sunrise.” “It’s a starry night on Ivan’s day, there will be a lot of mushrooms.” “If the rain starts crying, then in five days the sun will laugh.” “Ivanovo rains are better than the golden mountain.”

“Before Ivan, children, ask God for rain, and after Ivan I myself will ask (i.e., frequent rains will begin).”

Ivan Kupala Day is similar to many pagan holidays of other nations: celebrations dedicated to the god of fire were known in India, Persia, in Ancient Rome (the holiday of Vesta and Ceres), in Ancient Greece (the Eleusinian mysteries), among the ancient Germans, Danes, and Finns.

Midsummer's Day has always been associated with numerous superstitions, rituals and customs. One of the most ancient customs was the collection of medicinal and magical herbs on Kupala night.

The days of the summer solstice were associated in folk tradition with the time of flowering maturity of herbs and plants. But those who collected herbs have long been considered sorcerers and were hunted down. If bunches of unknown grass were found in the house, they could inflict cruel reprisals: the sorcerers were tortured, beaten, forcing them to give up “unclean” deeds.

According to popular beliefs, at this time in the forest one could find not only bathing grass or bear ears, but also stumble upon a magical fern flower, which blooms only on Midsummer night and indicates the place where the treasure is buried.

The holiday of Ivan Kupala has long been associated with rampant evil spirits. Mermaids spent their last days on earth: according to popular belief, in the spring they came out of the water, came to life, wandered through the forest, confusing travelers with their hoots and whistles, or hung from trees.

After the Kupala night, the mermaids had to return to the waters of the rivers, which were considered the shortest path to the kingdom of the dead - the underworld. To protect themselves from evil spirits and diseases, on Kupala night people lit high fires.

The tradition of lighting fires is also associated with the pagan cult of the fire god Perun, who is identical to Zeus of the ancient Greeks and Jupiter of the ancient Romans. Round dances were held around the fires, but the most famous tradition was jumping over the fires.

According to popular belief, this saved people from all diseases (including infertility). In addition, there was a custom of jumping over the fire in pairs, holding hands. In this way, the relationship between a guy and a girl was tested.

Mothers brought and burned the shirts of their sick children on the Kupala bonfires: according to folk superstitions, it was believed that this way the children should recover faster. In order to always remain beautiful and healthy, before lighting the fires, girls went to the bathhouse and steamed with fresh birch brooms with fragrant herbs, and in the morning they washed themselves with Kupala dew.

In Bulgaria, there is a custom on the summer solstice to celebrate a similar holiday of the “red butterfly” (Piperudy). According to custom, on these days girls dress up in leaves and marsh grasses and go out into the fields to catch butterflies and moths, having fun and singing songs.

On Ivan Kupala they read a conspiracy to gain success. On this day, you had to go out into the field, choose the tallest ear, pick it and say: “Just as this ear is higher than others, so I, the servant of God (name), will be higher than others.” Then the ear is sewn into clothes and carried with you.

Now the holiday of Ivan Kupala is celebrated rarely and without the same scope, but folk signs associated with the weather still continue to be repeated.

If heavy dew fell on Ivan Kupala, this foreshadowed a good harvest of cucumbers. And a clear starry sky on Midsummer means mushroom summer.

The holidays lasted until Peter's Day, which came the next month - July, called the crown of summer.

July 9

Day of the Tikhvin Mother of God Icon. David of Thessalonica, David Strawberry. The berries are ripe for Tikhvinskaya. Strawberries are calling girls to the forest. “A bee flies to Tikhvinskaya to collect honey.”

On the day of the appearance of the Tikhvin Mother of God (July 9), according to folk signs, strawberries ripen in the forests. If it rains on this day, the whole summer until September will be rainy. Good weather on this day portends warmth and sunshine for seven weeks in a row.

July 10

Samson the Host, Samson Senognoy. It rains on Samson - it rains for seven weeks. “On Samson, the hay is green - black porridge (buckwheat); black hay - white porridge (wheat).”

Samson will be showered with hay rain for seven weeks; From Peter's Day, summer is red, mowing is green; On Peter's day, the girls baptize the cuckoo - they worship in the forest over scrambled eggs.
