DIY shadow theater for children: a guide to action

Before you start preparing the shadow theater and the performance itself, it is important to consider a few tips for working with this type of art:

  • You can start getting acquainted with shadow theater at the age of one and a half years. At first, the child can act as a spectator. Over time, having understood the essence of the process, children can learn the script and voice the characters on their own.
  • Figures for the theater need to be made from black or very dark material so that the quality of the performance is excellent. For repeated use of the set, it is advisable to laminate the silhouettes.
  • Use a flashlight or desk lamp to illuminate the screen. It should be located behind and very slightly to the side of the screen.
  • Choose the appropriate amount of shadows. To do this, you do not need to make blanks of different sizes. It is enough to change their location: closer to the screen the figures become smaller, and when they move away from the screen they increase.
  • Whatman paper, a white canvas, is used as a screen. The smaller the screen diagonal, the thinner the canvas and brighter the lighting will be needed.
  • To create a theatrical atmosphere, prepare tickets, as well as a poster and sweets for intermission.
